Arizona's redistricting process had more to do with Republican gains in the state's House delegation than voter trends.

While Democrats won some of Arizona's top statewide elected positions and held on to Mark Kelly's Senate seat, they did not fare as well in its House races. Arizona's congressional delegationSeven of the state's nine congressional seats were held by incumbents: Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz.; Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz.; Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz.; Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.; Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz.; Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz.; and Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz.

The loss of Democratic seats is more of a reflection of redistricting than voter dissatisfaction of political officeholders, some analysts say. However, national Democrats made spending decisions based on incorrect assumptions, which ultimately may have cost Democrats one or two House seats. Arizona losing its Democratic-majority in its House delegation largely was due to how the districts were redrawn, more than a mirroring over voter unhappiness or errant campaign strategy. Still, the Democrats did make some miscalculations, particularly at the national level.

Geoff Vetter, senior vice president at Clyde Group, as well as former communications director for Democrat Fred DuVal’s 2014 gubernatorial campaign, told The Arizona Republic that the new map included more safe Republican House districts.
