PHOENIX — Letter grades for schools in Arizona for the 2022-2023 school year were released Friday. The grades are used to measure school performance.

In all, 15 Arizona schools got a failing grade. The majority received"B" grades. Schools can appeal their letter grade but must do so by Nov. 15 at 5 p.m. Schools who appeal their grade will be marked as"UR," or"under review," until the State Board of Education takes action. The system measures student academic growth in English language arts, math and science. It also looks at whether elementary students are ready for success in high school and whether high school students are ready for a career or higher education. Distinguished performance on the statewide assessment, significant student growth, high four-year graduation rates, students on track to proficiency; overall performance is significantly higher than state average.

It is considered the largest metropolitan area in the Southwest. Whether a city is in the “East Valley” or “West Valley” depends on where it is in relation to Phoenix. The cities of the Valley have a combined population of 4,845,832 people, according to the 2020 United States Census.
