Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Richard Durbin stressed that Cotton’s holds “have nothing to do with the nominees or their qualifications.”
to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio over an unrelated dispute he’s having with the Department of Justice.
Durbin stressed that Cotton’s holds “have nothing to do with the nominees or their qualifications.” He said Cotton has a right to stall the nominations under the committee’s rules, but said, “the fact that you have the right to do this is not exactly a rationale for doing it when you consider the consequences.”
“I would note that during the Trump administration, the Justice Department constantly stonewalled Democratic attempts at oversight, yet Democrats did not respond by needlessly delaying...consideration of U.S. attorneys and U.S. marshals who together represent the chief federal law enforcement officials in their respective districts,” Durbin continued.
The top Republican on the committee, Iowa’s Charles Grassley, said he wouldn’t comment on the recent delay but said that “whether you have a Republican president, a Democrat president, a Republican Senate or a Democrat Senate, a lot of innocent people have been hurt by these administrations, Republican or Democrat, not responding properly to congressional requests for information.”
A Thursday statement from Brown’s office applauded Darden’s qualifications and said he hopes Cotton will lift the hold and allow the committee to do its work and quickly confirm her.
