It’s been described as one of the worst intelligence failures by Israel to date - and now questions are being asked how a group of Hamas militants breached Israel’s land security barriers, as others entered on motorised paragliders and speed boats on sea from Gaza.
Nearly 500 people have died and thousands are injured in both Israel and Gaza after Hamas launched a surprise dawn attack on Israel on Saturday during the Jewish high holiday of Simchat Torah. At least 250 Israelis were killed and 1100 wounded by gunbattles raging in more than 20 locations inside Israel. In Gaza, health officials reported more than 230 people killed and 1600 wounded after Israel responded with major retaliatory air strikes.
30am Palestinian Islamist group Hamas fired a huge barrage of rockets across southern Israel. One hour later, Israeli military said Palestinian gunmen had crossed into Israel. Most fighters crossed through breaches in land security barriers separating Gaza and Israel. But at least one was filmed crossing on a powered parachute while a speedboat was filmed heading to Zikim, an Israeli coastal town and military base.
