Walton-le-Dale robber told police 'mum will be disappointed' as he was snared mid-knifepoint raid on BP garage
An armed robber who held up a petrol station at knifepoint apologised to police who caught him in the act, then told them his mum would be disappointed.
At 5am he entered the garage and told the cashier to open the till before helping himself to a can of beer, a packet of cigarettes from behind the counter and cash from the till. Cashier Lingeswaran Rengasamy fled the shop and locked McCaughey inside before calling for the police to attend. As Mr Lingesamy waited outside, McCaughey sat on the floor, opened the beer, lit a cigarette and counted the cash out into separate denominations, Preston Crown Court heard.
Recorder Prowse read a number of medical reports and took into consideration the fact McCaughey had never committed any offences prior to January 2020. He has not committed any crimes since. McCaughey, of Manor Close, Hoghton, pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a bladed article and appeared at Preston Crown Court to be sentenced. Recorder Prowse said an immediate prison sentence may weigh more heavily of the defendant and exacerbate his mental health problems.
