It doesn’t matter how rich or famous you are as a South Korean athlete, all able-bodied men are expected to serve before the age of 35. But there’s one way to avoid it.

Think hitting from the first tee in front of thousands of rowdy fans at the Ryder Cup in Rome is nerve-shredding pressure? It wasn’t even the most daunting task facing any golfer on the weekend.

Multi-millionaires and PGA Tour winners Sung-jae Im and Si-woo Kim travelled to Hangzhou for the Asian Games - and won a gold medal. That grants them an exemption from 21 months of mandatory service with the South Korean military. Im and Kim failed to win medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and instead turned their attention to the Asian Games, which only accepted professional golfers for the first time this year.

Im, who finished in a tie for second with Australia’s Cameron Smith at The Masters three years ago, won a silver medal in the individual competition.Im is ranked No.26 in the world and has won more than $36 million in prize money during his career, while Kim is also nestled inside the world’s top 40 and won the Sony Open in Hawaii earlier this year on the PGA Tour.
