Had the dead man’s mother not intervened, the promoted officer may have been allowed to stay in the army, the chief of defence told a royal commission.
An army officer who was promoted after allegedly bullying a colleague – who later took his life – could have been allowed to stay in the Defence Force if an aggrieved mother hadn’t come forward.
Counsel assisting Peter Gray QC pressed Campbell further over the promotion process for officers and whether there was now a provision to prompt appraisers to check a soldier’s behaviour history before promoting them.Advertisement “Additionally, allegations otherwise of bullying were not part of the consideration of a longitudinal pattern of behaviour,” Campbell said.
