in February 2020, “Honestly, I never thought about Broadway because it wasn’t there to do things that came out of the Negro Ensemble Company. If the plays got done, I was very happy. It wasn’t something that I looked forward to or chased after.”
Waters heads up a company of Black soldiers in the still-segregated armed forces. It being rural Louisiana, his shooting death after leaving the base club one night in a state of extreme inebriation is at first assumed to be Klan-related. Captain Richard Davenport, a Black officer and lawyer, is sent to investigate the murder a month later, after the Black press and the NAACP have turned up the heat about it.
And the man who falls squarely into his sights is Private C.J. Memphis, a gifted blues guitarist and singer from rural Mississippi who, after briefly delighting Waters with his musical gifts, soon becomes the target of rage and retaliation.
Lewis, a longtime vet of film , television, and stage, brings gravitas and foxy wariness to Davenport, along with enough swagger to justify the shades he wears indoors. He narrates the series of flashbacks that peel back the layers of the tragedy at the heart of the story: Waters’s own inability to see himself except through the lens of how white people judge him.
