U.S. Army veteran and single mom Cindy Mendoza didn’t imagine owning a home would be in her future. It is now with an assist from Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana.

Wende Burbridge, director of development at Habitat, said it received a special designation for the Honor Build initiative through Habitat International to receive specific funds for veterans.“Veterans deserve safe, affordable homes,” she said. “When we got the designation, over 14,000 Lake County veteran families were living in housing distress.”
Work began on her Lake Station home last year and is in the final stages of construction. “We were fortunate enough to be able to pick out things,” she said. A single mom with six kids, Jones is living in Gary until her home is completed but her children are already attending the Lake Station schools. Her oldest son graduated from Edison High last year and earned a track scholarship to Calumet College of St. Joseph.
