The building hosted the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly in 1776, which declared Pennsylvania an independent commonwealth and mobilized its militia for war against the British Empire.

affiliates are reporting that the fire - which destroyed archives in the basement of Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia’s historic district - appears to have been intentionally set, and an exterior entrance to the basement was discovered with its lock broken off.

The fire occurred around 8 p.m. Christmas Eve, and was discovered by an officer on foot patrol. The entrance believed to have been used by the perpetrator was not covered by security cameras, according to 6 ABC. The oldest historical archives associated with Carpenter’s Hall were stored off-site, with most of the material destroyed in the basement fire being 20th century records - but the loss is still significant, according to officials quoted by the news stations.

Carpenters’ Hall was the meeting site of the First Continental Congress, which assembled in late 1774. In June 1776, the building hosted the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly which declared Pennsylvania an independent commonwealth and mobilized its militia for war against the British Empire.
