Art of the City: Local painter debuts ambitious “interventions” within the paintings of the Timken Museum of Art

One of the more misunderstood aspects of abstract art is that it’s instinct first and intricacy comes second.

“Sometimes my work is an ampersand, I’ll draw it or I’ll have it in mind and I’ll shoot for it,” says Rich, referring to the cursive logogram that he often returns to in his work. “Sometimes it starts with a piece of canvas and I’ll just start going. But sometimes my compositions have a very obvious sense of visual depth. So when I put together a show, I have a number of different ways of making things, sometimes logical and sometimes they don’t follow logic at all.

“It will fill up the entire space between the orthogonals that connect the outer edge of the frames of the paintings,” Rich said. “It’s going to be, I’m not sure how to describe it, one continuous artwork?”“No, it’s going to be four Timken paintings with the space in between those paintings filled with paintings that I made,” he adds.

In many ways, this approach could be traced back to another artist residency and exhibition at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, where he began using more sculptural elements within his practice, “sort of painting as sculpture,” as he refers to it.
