South Australian artist Emmaline Zanelli wanted to understand what life was like for young people in a remote desert mining town. So she took a bunch of cameras and went to meet the young people living there.
A still from Emmaline Zanelli 's video artwork , which captures the experiences of young people growing up next to South Australia's Olympic Dam mine.A car is pulled over on the side of a dirt road, on the outskirts of Roxby Downs , a town in the South Australian outback. It's dusk and a person with a camera clambers on top of the roof.
First set up in 1986, Roxby Downs has a population of 4,000 people, 3,500 of whom are employed by the mine. Zanelli was one of three artists awarded the inaugural Adelaide Film Festival/Samstag Expand Moving Commission, which enabled her to complete this project."I've had family members doing FIFO work, and I think it's a really extreme way to live," Zanelli tells ABC Arts. "Also, Olympic Dam is the largest mine in South Australia, so I was interested to see what life is like the social culture up there.
Watching the work, there's all sorts of surreal scenes: a hairless cat is pushed around in a pram, a teenager dances on an empty squash court, kids do repetitive laps around a remote BMX track.
