Initiatives like this take a surface-level approach to quitting booze
Predictably, my Sober October was followed by “No Remember November” as I made up for lost time. I may have raised £150 for charity, but I learned nothing. Over the next few years, I lost touch with moderation as my drinking escalated and my blackouts increased. I was plagued with insomniaI struggled to work. At my lowest point, my mental health was so poor that I wondered if life was worth living.
It took a trip to my GP in January 2017 to realise that I needed to break up with alcohol. When I told him about the blackouts, anxiety and insomnia, he gently suggested I quit drinking for a while to see if it made any difference. Fed up with the state of my life, I agreed to give it a go. Giving up alcohol is the best decision I have ever made, but it’s been far from easy. I had to learn to socialise without liquid courage. I engaged in therapy to work out how to face my emotions head-on rather than anesthetise them with alcohol. I also had to adjust to living in a culture where alcohol is so embedded that Sober October and Dry January are the only times people feel they can take a break from booze without being eyed with suspicion or disapproval.
If you are participating in Sober October, I wish you the best of luck. For people who have a problematic relationship with alcohol sobriety isn’t something we can switch on and off; it’s something we have to commit to for the rest of our lives.
