Chicago’s changing demographics, with an outflow of Black residents and an influx of Latinos, are at the heart of a battle over city council seats
CHICAGO—A commercial strip dominated by taquerias and other Latino-owned businesses on Chicago’s Southwest side is at the heart of a City Council battle over aLatinos recently surpassed the number of Black residents here for the first time.
In the 2020 Census, Chicago’s Hispanic population grew by 5% from 2010 to 819,518, while the non-Hispanic Black population fell 10% to 787,551. The non-Hispanic white population, meanwhile, rose 1% to 863,622 and the Asian population jumped 31% to 189,857. In recent decades, hundreds of thousands of Black residents have left the city in search of better opportunities or safer neighborhoods elsewhere—and Latinos have moved in.
