It is a canticle“Lift every voice and sing/ Till earth and heaven ring/ Ring with the harmonies of liberty. ...”, a lawyer and the first Black executive secretary of the NAACP, wrote the lyrics in 1900 for a celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. His brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, set it to music.
I embraced the song even more while attending Howard University, a historically Black institution in Washington, D.C.
