‘As legal as garlic’: High times in Thailand as marijuana is decriminalised | ChrisBarrett_
Thailand will on Thursday become the first country in Asia to effectively legalise marijuana in a landmark move its government hopes will supercharge its wellness and tourism industries and generate as much as 10 billion baht per year.
The delisting has been driven by Thailand Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, whose Bhumjaithai or “Pride of Thailand” party has campaigned on a platform of legalising marijuana. “We understand that it needs to be controlled but [it should be] control that is not so tight that you kind of ruin the industry.”has also discussed the concept of a “cannabis sandbox”, which could allow people from Thailand and abroad to visit certain areas of the country where recreational use would be allowed. But as it stands that would also only include products with levels of THC below 0.2 per cent, unlikely to produce more than a very mild buzz.
Marijuana has been used for generations of Thais as a treatment for diseases and other ailments. A recent survey by YouGov, a market research firm, found nearly half of respondents had consumed cannabis-based products and more than 60 per cent were interested in using them.
