Syrians have lived amid the war for 11 years, and those that haven't stayed in have fled their homes.centers on the fictional story of Salama Kassab, a 17-year-old with a love for Studio Ghibli and her family. The teenager's once ordinary life is upended when the revolution begins and she starts volunteering at a hospital to help the wounded.
Katouh admits that writing the book was a raw and emotional experience. “I didn’t know how much I needed to write this book until I did. Not just for potential readers, but for me as well. To write a Muslimgirl who lives outside the box made from consistent negative stereotypes the media put her in. I wrote this book for everyone but in particular for Muslim girls and boys who never saw themselves in anything. To them I say, you are not who they made you to be,” she says.
Outside the supermarket a desolate picture greets me. I don’t recoil, used to the horror, but it amplifies the anguish in my heart. The sun has been slowly melting away the remains of winter, but the cold is still here. Spring, the symbol of new life, does not extend to worn- out Syria. Least of all my city, Homs. Misery reigns strong in the dead, heavy branches and rubble, thwarted only by the hope in people’s hearts.
