As monkeypox spreads in Houston and Texas, public health officials are reserving vaccines for people who have been exposed to a confirmed case.
“It is definitely upsetting that two-plus years into a public health crisis we already have missteps with a second one,” said Austin Davis Ruiz, spokesman for the Montrose Center, which offers health and social services for Houston’s LGBTQ community. “It seems we should have learned something from the COVID pandemic, in terms of making tests accessible, getting vaccines out to the general public and spreading awareness.
“Our case count is genuinely low,” said Brown, the health authority for Harris County. “Because Texas does not have a high case count, our need is not as high as other states.” Houston opened a mobile clinic on Fannin Street on July 10, near a location that had been visited by someone with an active infection. The unknown nature of the exposure in that case meant the city was able to offer vaccines more broadly then, and not just to people with confirmed encounters.
