ANALYSIS: As Victoria's duck season nears, the Premier's careful words signal change may be afoot
abc.net.au/news/victorian-duck-season-premier-daniel-andrews-language-signal/101948138Every year, dozens of dead ducks are dumped on the state seal outside the Victorian premier's office at 1 Treasury Place.some endangered ducks are shotIn Victoria, duck hunting is permitted on public land and for a designated season, with bag limits in place.
"It's on a knife edge,'' is how one duck-hunting supporting MP viewed the situation, adding "its never been like this before".There are MPs inside the ALP caucus and Cabinet who do not like duck hunting, but have had to tolerated it because it is government policy — Premier Daniel Andrews and his deputy Jacinta Allan have backed the hunt.
"I just don't blurt stuff out that hasn't been thought through and worked up properly,'' Andrews said on Tuesday, while being peppered with questions about poker machine reforms."There's plenty of groundwork being laid,'' one senior figure said.Discussions in the Labor Caucus and talking points distributed to MPs have been equally softer than in the past, government MPs have noted.
A possible ban on duck hunting does worry some Labor figures, who believe that the issue could be damaging in the outer suburbs where Labor is facing its biggest voter decline. Field and Game, a peak body that represents hunters, argues there is no scientific evidence to show that the season should abandoned.
