Australia has urged Israel to 'rein in violence' in the West Bank, which has doubled since October 7.
Violence in the occupied West Bank has surged since Israel began bombarding the Gaza Strip in its war against Hama s. The United Nations estimates that 115 Palestinians, including 33 children, have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers since 7 October and at least 1,000 are displaced. Foreign Minister Penny Wong urged Israel to "rein in" violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, which is not under Hamas control.
"They're likely to at least try to contain the violence because not doing anything serious … would mean giving free license to or signaling to other radical Jewish elements in the West Bank that they can do the same," Mayroz said. He said as well as settler violence, "enraged" Palestinians were taking to the streets and protesting with other parts of the Arab world over the violence in Gaza.
