Ten days after it was first revealed asbestos was found in mulch at a Melbourne playground, we are no closer to understanding how this has happened, who is to blame, how widespread the problem is, or what is being done to prevent it from continuing to happen.
Shockingly 10 days later we are no closer to understanding how this has happened, who is to blame, how widespread the problem is, or what is being done to prevent it from continuing to happen.
Just hours later, however, the Hobsons Bay Council released a statement confirming asbestos had indeed been found at three additional parks in Altona North: Crofts Reserve, PJ Lynch Reserve and GJ Hosken Reserve. And it noted mulch at these sites was from a different source to Donald McLean Reserve, which has been the focus of EPA’s initial investigations.
The EPA has been quick to point out that at least some of the contaminated mulch was put there before 2015, prior to new laws and regulations for mulch supplier and demolition companies that came into force in 2021. The possibility that asbestos found its way into recently supplied mulch via building material should not be discounted so easily, nor should the risks to public health be so lightly dismissed.
