Residents still living in Conjola Park were disturbed to notice that workers who visited their community always wore protective clothing.

Bushfire recovery efforts on the South Coast have been hampered by widespread asbestos contamination, with about 40 per cent of damaged properties found to contain the hazardous material.

Residents said they were disturbed to see council workers wearing protective clothing and face masks when they visited the area, though children whose homes had survived were breathing the same air without protection. An insurance assessor who visited one damaged home told the occupants that they should not be living there.

"We know the community is concerned about asbestos but the advice we've got is that there has not been any asbestos found in the air, and that's consistent with what we've found at Tathra as well." "We've been pushing and pushing and pushing, trying to get some results, some leadership on this issue from the Environmental Protection Authority, and until we get that direction we're sitting on our hands at the moment, waiting," he said.
