Students will be kept away from a Sydney school for two days after a piece of bonded asbestos was found in mulch used in a garden.
The discovery at Liverpool West Public School came after it was discovered the same manufacturer that supplied mulch to the, had been used at the school.
"As a result, our officers and a licensed asbestos assessor were sent out first thing Saturday morning to test and this afternoon, we were notified that one sample contained a single piece of bonded asbestos," he said. Chappel said he realised the find was "extremely concerning" for families and promised to "get to the bottom of this situation" as soon as possible.
A NSW Department of Education spokesperson said students would work remotely as the department worked with EPA officers and an accredited hygienist to get rid of all the mulch and replace it with "clean, unrecycled mulch".
