Shoppers have been left confused after discovering that best before dates on some fruit and vegetables have disappeared
Customers shopping at Asda were left scratching their heads after noticing that the best before dates on fruits and vegetables had been replaced by an enigmatic code. The swap was made in a bid to reduce food waste, with items such as apples, oranges, and pears no longer having an easily readable best before date.
Yet, another redditor, u/C2BK stated that the markings were actually not best before dates but rather stock control codes used internally, a tactic supposedly designed to discourage customer reliance on best before dates when purchasing fresh produce. u/fun_level_7787 commented: "Tbh, it's simple to tell when food is OK to eat vs. Not OK. Having these dates only leads to food wastage, which is a major problem around the world but it's simply there to get items off the shelves. If you went to a market, most things aren't dated anyway? ".
Love Food Hate Waste stated: "More and more retailers are joining the fight against food waste by removing 'Best Before' dates on much of their fresh produce! We're talking fresh fruit and veg that hasn't been prepared so not things like the chopped-up fruit salad pots, carrot batons or salad bags you'd find in the chiller."
