Australian cricketer Ash Gardner advocates for expanding the Women's Ashes series to include three Test matches, arguing for a more balanced format that emphasizes longer-form cricket.
Australia n all-rounder Ash Gardner has called for the women’s Ashes series to be extended to three Tests while acknowledging the change may not be possible until the end of the next Future Tours Programme cycle.
Speaking to reporters at the SCG on Wednesday morning, Gardner expressed her desire for the multi-format Ashes series to be extended to nine matches, including three T20s, three ODIs and three Tests. “It’s obviously going to make the tours a lot longer. I’m not sure where you’re going to fit it in, knowing that we obviously have to play overseas competitions as well. It would be interesting to see over the next four to five years where that gets to.
“As an opening batter, that’s part of why you love the game, that battle of trying to maybe get one up on an opening bowler, and I think it builds even more in Test cricket. That’s why I love getting the whites on.” “I think the space in the calendar is a real challenge,” Hockley told reporters at the SCG on Wednesday.“I think for the for the next little period, it’s just really trying to find space.”“I think it’s a fantastic format … it gives context within series.”While the 2023 women’s Ashes campaign began with the Test match, this month’s series will conclude with a historic pink-ball contest at the MCG, the first day-night Test at the iconic venue.
The 2023 Test in Nottingham was extended to five days, with Australia clinching victory early on the fifth morning courtesy of Gardner’s eight-wicket haul in the second innings.
