White House covid coordinator Ashish Jha will step down next week as the Biden administration formally ends the role, the latest marker that officials believe the virus threat has largely passed.
Some of Jha’s duties, such as helping coordinate and advise the president on the administration’s coronavirus response, will be shifted to a new White House pandemic office, although a director has not been named.
Jha “effectively translated and communicated complex scientific challenges into concrete actions that helped save and improve the lives of millions of Americans,” Biden said in his statement.More than 1.1 million Americans have died of covid since early 2020, although severe coronavirus cases and deaths have plunged in recent months. The Biden administration formally ended its public health emergency for the coronavirus pandemic on May 11.
