The law firm’s CEO has produced a nonsense mission statement that ignores the main purpose of business.

In 1978, in an attempt to impose organisational clarity on what could otherwise be a fractious partnership, a partner at Melbourne’s BlakeIn a nine-paragraph memo, Geoffrey Hone stated that the overriding priority of then senior partner Allen Stewart, a property expert who helped create the ANZ Banking Group, was to attain “an acceptable level of profitability” and provide “first-class advice to its clients”.

American department store Walmart sums up the company’s objective in nine simple words: “We save people money so they can live better.” Like people, companies that describe themselves using superlatives aren’t credible. Few businesses change everyday life, and much work is bureaucratic.
