Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Director General Mike Burgess has argued the efforts of politicians to tone down political rhetoric is 'not going as well as I would like' following the October 7 attacks and amid the threat of terrorism in the country.

It is the first time since 2014 that Australia's threat level has reached the rating, with the ASIO boss citing espionage, foreign interference and politically motivated violence as the agency's"principal security concerns". Rising tensions in the Middle East following the October 7 attacks have prompted an uptick in divisive rhetoric in Australia and overseas, which the ASIO boss suggested was also heightening the risk of politically-motivated violence.

“It’s also a role for politicians, community leaders, even myself, the language I use, how I describe something, politicians have to debate, they have to challenge, they have to disagree. Rising tensions in the Middle East have prompted an uptick in divisive rhetoric in Australia and overseas, which the ASIO boss suggested was also heightening the risk of politically motivated violence.

It is not just politicians who can create and propagate inflammatory rhetoric, however, with Mr Burgess also laying a significant amount of blame on the doorstep of major tech platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, now X."If you're just online and isolated you can quickly fall down that rabbit hole of hate."
