Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad has broken his silence for the first time since fleeing to Russia, insisting he never intended to leave the country despite rebel forces overrunning the capital Damascus.
‘Flood of misinformation’: Syrian dictator Bashar al- Assad insists it was not his idea to flee Syria in first statement since ousting
Assad claimed a “flood of misinformation” began circulating after news of his departure broke, adding it had been designed to paint “international terrorism” as a “liberation revolution”. “On the contrary, I remained in Damascus, carrying out my duties until the early hours of Sunday 8th December 2024,” Assad wrote.
Assad then described how the tide of battle had “continued to deteriorate” with the Russian military base, situated on the West coast of Syria some 300 kilometres north of Damascus, coming under “intensified attack by drone strikes”. “Furthermore, the person who has never abandoned the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, nor betrayed his allies who stood by him, cannot possibly be the same person who would forsake his own people or betray the army and nation to which he belongs,” he wrote.
"When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose, rendering its occupation meaningless.”
