An aircraft believed to be carrying Julian Assange has landed in Bangkok, as the Australian Wikileaks founder’s long battle against extradition to the United States nears its conclusion.

An aircraft carrying Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has landed in Thailand’s capital of Bangkok ahead of the Australian’s release via a US plea deal.

The aircraft – which has the flight number VJT199 – landed at Thailand’s Don Mueang International Airport, north of Bangkok, about 12.30pm on Tuesday . The plane is scheduled to depart Thailand about 9pm and fly to the Northern Mariana Islands, a self-governing US territory in the western Pacific, where the Australian is expected to front a US Federal Court and plead guilty to one count of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information – a violation of the US Espionage Act.

Julian Assange has agreed to a plea deal which will bring an end to his long running fight to avoid extradition to the United States.
