Julian Assange’s lawyer said he saw no indication of resolution to US charges against the Wikileaks founder, despite reports that the DoJ is considering a guilty plea deal.
US lawyers are mulling discussing a guilty plea deal for Julian Assange, the WSJ reported. An Assange lawyer saw no indication of a resolution to US charges against him.
Such a deal would potentially allow Assange to enter a plea to the misdemeanour charge remotely, and walk free without travelling to the US, which has been seeking his extradition from the UK for years.
Assange’s supporters say he has been victimised because he exposed US wrongdoing, including in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Multiple rights groups, leading media organisations and the leaders of countries like Mexico, Brazil and Australia have urged the charges against Assange, who is an Australian citizen, be dropped.
Assange has been languishing in a UK prison since 2019, after the US charged him and police in London dragged him from the Ecuadorian embassy.
