This article explores historical events that occurred on December 19th, including the assassination of Russian ambassador Andrey Karlov, the sentencing of serial killer Fritz Haarmann, and the impeachment of US President Bill Clinton.
After opening fire on Karlov, he was himself killed by Turkish security officers. The assassination came amid unrest in Turkey over Russia's support of Bashar al-Assad's regime in the Syrian civil war. By contrast, Altintas's body was not claimed by his family, who called him a 'traitor'. The assassination was widely condemned internationally, and celebrated by terror groups such as ISIS.
German serial killer Friedrich Heinrich Karl 'Fritz' Haarmann was sentenced to death by beheading on December 19, 1924 for a series of sexual assaults and murders between 1918 and 1924 that earned him the moniker, 'The Butcher of Hanover'. Haarmann was also called the 'Wolf-Man' and 'Vampire of Hanover' as he was known to bite through his victim's throats, an act he referred to as his 'love bite'. He was found guilty of 24 murders, although he is suspected of committing at least 27. His victims were males aged between 10 and 22. Haarmann would lure his victims with promises of work or accommodation before murdering and dismembering them. He was beheaded in April 1925 at the age of 45. A total of 239 men and boys were killed in the Darr Mine Disaster in Pennsylvania, US, on January 19, 1907. The accident was blamed on the workers carrying open lamps in a cordoned-off area, triggering an explosion. President Bill Clinton became the second commander-in-chief of the US to be impeached on December 19, 1998. The House of Representatives voted to impeach Clinton after an inquiry found the president had lied about having a sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. However, the impeachment vote failed in the US Senate
