The PSNI say budget pressures mean it is no longer able to contribute to funding city centre CCTV
A Derry assault victim who suffered both eye and neck injuries and psychological trauma following an unprovoked attack on a busy city centre street has said it is 'appalling' that funding for CCTV has been reduced.
Speaking to Belfast Live again this week, Aodhan said police have now told him that despite CCTV footage being captured in the area, they have been unable to identify the attacker from the video. "The CCTV footage shows the individual walking down to the location of where I was assaulted and then later walking away. Whenever he was walking away after assaulting me, he was recorded on the CCTV camera re-enacting the punch to the people that he was with. The actual punch itself, the assault itself, it wasn't captured on camera because there was a tree in the way."
"But my question is could more be done? What the police said to me is that they weren't any further forward but they're continuing to monitor the situation. What does that mean? What does that mean for me? And what does that mean for everyone else? "The fact is that there's just a clear lack of coverage on that street and many streets around Derry. I think it's, to say the least, an absolute joke and I would call for a review of the CCTV systems. I honestly think it's appalling to hear that the funding has been reduced.
“The reality is the strategic outlook for policing remains stark. The Police budget remains insufficient and is not sustainable."
