'It's a wonderful thing for science': US astronaut Christina Koch has broken the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, having spent 289 days in space, according to NASA
US astronaut Christina Koch has broken the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, having spent 289 days in space, according to NASA.
Having arrived on the International Space Station on March 15, Koch eclipsed the record of 288 days set by retired astronaut Peggy Whitson.NASA congratulated Koch for "reaching new heights" in a tweet. "It's a wonderful thing for science," Koch said from aboard the ISS. "We see another aspect of how the human body is affected by microgravity for the long term, and that's really important for our future spaceflight plan going forward to the moon and to Mars."By the time she returns to earth in February, her time in space will stand at 328 days, just 12 days shy of retired astronaut Scott Kelly's US single spaceflight record, set in 2016.
While onboard the two-decades-old ISS, Koch participates in scientific research, station maintenance, outreach, visiting vehicle operations and spacewalks, according to NASA's website.
