Brandon Bielak took over for Garcia and pitched well across four innings, yielding two earned runs, two hits, one home run, three walks and six strikeouts. After Bielak, four Houston relievers teamed to cover five innings. Phil Maton retired all six batters he faced and Ryne Stanek took care of the bottom of the order in a clean seventh inning. Rafael Montero surrendered a solo home run in the eighth before Ryan Pressly closed out the win with a scoreless frame.
The Astros had scored seven runs in their last four games with three home runs. On Monday, they eschewed power for plentiful soft contact. All but one of Houston’s 10 hits were singles. Half of the hits had exit velocities lower than 85 mph. Abreu’s RBI single 104.4 mph off the bat put the Astros on the board in the first inning, but Joc Pederson gave the Giants the lead two innings later with a two-run homer on a 3-1 pitch from Bielak.
The Astros batted around and scored five runs in the seventh inning, which began with Meyers drawing a walk against Giants righthander Sean Hjelle and ended with him striking out against righthander Tristan Beck.Bielak was informed Sunday night that he would not make his scheduled start for Class AAA Sugar Land on Tuesday because he was being called up, but neither he nor the Astros were expecting him to be thrust into action as soon as he was on Monday.
