Houston Astros relief pitcher Bryan Abreu pitches during the seventh inning of an MLB baseball game at Angel Stadium on Friday, April 8, 2022 in Anaheim.ANAHEIM, Calif. — Before Friday’s game became a farce, the Astros’ search for another leverage reliever revved up. Dusty Baker did not have three of his trusted relievers available after using Phil Maton, Héctor Neris and Ryan Pressly in Thursday’s opening day win.

Finding a fifth arm to complement that trio and Ryne Stanek would bolster Houston’s bullpen depth. Bryan Abreu has the sort of arsenal to end the search. He recorded the biggest out of, striking out Tyler Wade with the tying runs on base during the sixth inning of a two-run game. Abreu blew a 99.1 mph fastball by Wade in a 2-2 count. He threw a clean seventh, too, retiring Shohei Ohtani in the process. Abreu threw three four-seam fastballs at 99 mph or harder, matching his total from 42 previous major league appearances.

“That’s why he’s on the team,” Baker said. “He’s always had the stuff. It’s a matter of him making quality pitches and repeating his delivery. He’s changed his delivery some. This would be a big boost on our team if we can count on him, especially in clutch situations.” One outing is not cause for overreaction. Abreu still has control problems and needs to harness far more consistency. But Abreu’s velocity spike is an intriguing development. He averaged 95.7 mph in 2021 and just 92.8 mph during the 60-game season in 2020. Pair that with his two terrific breaking balls and the Astros could have a valuable leverage reliever.
