Astros insider: Framber Valdez proves the big A, as in ace, in Anaheim

Lefthander Framber Valdez gave the Astros their longest start of the season Tuesday night, throwing 99 pitches in an eight-inning gem against the Angels.ANAHEIM, Calif. — It’s almost impossible for anyone to get top billing over Shohei Ohtani right now in baseball.

Valdez’s stellar eight innings were just what the Astros needed after three consecutive games, all losses, in which their starting pitcher didn’t make it out of the fifth. Manager Dusty Baker had bemoaned having to dip into his bullpen earlier than desired.“We really needed this game,” Baker said. “It was a good day for us and a good day for Framber.

Valdez struck out 12 — one shy of his career high set last July 3 in the same stadium — and allowed only three hits. His lone blemish was a third-inning solo homer by rookie shortstop Zach Neto, and the Angels put only one runner in scoring position the rest of the way. “Framber, I feel like he’s been our horse the last couple years. Every time he goes out there, we’ve been expecting seven innings out of him.”
