Rhode Island native Jeremy Peña had never played at Fenway Park before Tuesday's game....
When Peña missed a bunt sign and made the first public mistake of his career,and promised it would not happen again. Peña’s poise is all anyone talks about. It is obvious in success and must remain during the inevitable struggles to come.
They cheered so loud it drew the attention of the Astros awaiting the game’s start. Teammates forced the rookie to pop his head above the railing. Veteran players appeared to encourage the group to shower praise upon PeñaManager Dusty Baker gave Peña an extra day to nurse a sore right knee. Perhaps it was wise. Unbeknownst to Baker, his oft-controlled rookie could not control his nerves.
Tuesday brought a more tame environment. Peña’s parents, Geronimo and Carmen Cecilia, watched him take pregame infield and batting practice from two seats a section above the Astros dugout. A few high school friends surprised Peña when they showed up on the field. Playing beneath so many friends can sometimes cause tension.
