Astros catcher Martín Maldonado is slowly gaining steam offensively.
Houston Astros Jeremy Pena , Chas McCormick , and Kyle Tucker point to Martin Maldonado after scoring runs on his RBI double during the eighth inning of an MLB at Minute Maid Park on Thursday, May 19, 2022 in Houston. The Rangers needed just one more out to head to the ninth inning with a one-run deficit and keep their hopes alive. The man known as “Machete” cut them down.
Maldonado is one of the emotional heartbeats of the Astros, though his on-field contributions typically manifest in his superior defense behind the plate. Before his eighth-inning at-bat, he had a season batting average of .112 and a .425 OPS. A 1-for-4 game and a season-high three RBIs were cause for celebration.
When the bases-loaded opportunity arrived on Thursday, the Astros had Michael Brantley and Yuli Gurriel, who led the American League in batting average last year, available on the bench. Astros manager Dusty Baker opted not to use them for either Jose Siri or Maldonado.
