LOS ANGELES – Dusty Baker faced a decision in Sunday’s eighth inning. The Astros held a three-run lead at Dodger Stadium. Baker surveyed his bullpen options for a leverage situation.
Baker summoned Rafael Montero for the eighth. Last season, the move would have seemed standard. Montero posted a 2.37 ERA in 71 regular-season outings for Houston in 2022, then a 1.93 ERA over 10 postseason appearances. The three-year, $34.5 million deal the Astros gave Montero in the offseason classified him as a reliever who would see more critical situations.
After a rough outing by Montero last Wednesday in Houston, Baker acknowledged the righthander has “been struggling – I know it, you know it, everybody knows it.” After Sunday’s game, Baker was asked if he would need to re-evaluate how and when Montero is being used.
