CLEVELAND, OH - AUGUST 05: Josh Naylor #22 of the Cleveland Guardians runs to first as Chas McCormick #20 of the Houston Astros attempts to tag him out in the bottom of the seventh inning at Progressive Field on August 5, 2022 in Cleveland, Ohio. The hit by Naylor was called a foul ball. CLEVELAND — Trey Mancini arrived at the juncture of disappointment and elation. The Astros had the bases loaded with two outs and a one-run lead. The critical at-bat belonged to one of their newest members.

“I mean, I don't know if you can handpick a few better guys to hit in front of you than them,” Mancini said. “So yeah, it's just really exciting and I'm just thrilled to be part of this.”Before Houston traded for him on Monday, Mancini spent his entire major-league career in Baltimore and became an icon there. His battle against colon cancer during the 2020 season made him an inspiration to countless inside and outside the city.

Mancini hit 10 home runs in 92 games played for Baltimore this season. It took him four games with Houston to hit three more. After hitting a two-run homer in Wednesday’s 6-1 win over the Red Sox at Minute Maid Park, he went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBIs on Friday in Cleveland. The 30-year-old Mancini wanted to make a positive impact with the Astros. He didn’t necessarily envision it unfolding like this.
