Astros-Mariners Game 3: Another great escape for Lance McCullers Jr.
— Seattle rookie righthander George Kirby has been very impressive. He’s through six scoreless innings and has not at all seemed daunted by this setting. Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman are 0-for-8 against him. Houston has managed four singles. —— Zeroes matter and Lance McCullers Jr. is getting it done in Game 3.
McCullers is a much different pitcher than he was in 2015. Through five innings in Seattle, he's still putting up zeroes in the scoring column that matters and has done his part to sweep the Mariners. —— Lance McCullers Jr. gets a pivotal strikeout to end the fifth inning, getting Mariners rookie phenom to whiff on a full-count slider with a runner on first. It's still 0-0 going to the sixth inning.
If Lance McCullers Jr. doesn't have a quick inning, Seattle could soon be into the Astros' bullpen. —The Astros appeared to catch a massive break in the fourth after replay review couldn’t overturn a questionable hit by pitch on Trey Mancini. The sellout crowd at T-Mobile park booed as Mancini stayed at first and Houston loaded the bases. Chas McCormick lined out to strand them. Through four innings, Houston is 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and has stranded five baserunners.
The Astros won Games 1 and 2 but both were close and defined by late Yordan Alvarez home runs. In Game 3, the Astros have three consecutive zeroes at the plate, and three of their hitters are still seeking a first hit.— Home-plate umpire Marvin Hudson is calling a tight strike zone, which resulted in Lance McCullers Jr. walking Mitch Haniger immediately after Cal Raleigh walked to lead off the second inning.
