Astros prospect Pedro León underwent sports hernia surgery and will be out “approximately six to eight weeks.”Astros outfield prospect Pedro León underwent sports hernia surgery and will not report to spring training on time, the club announced on Wednesday.

León had the procedure on Tuesday and, according to the Astros, will miss “approximately six to eight weeks.” It’s unclear when or how León sustained his injury, but he did play 33 games in the Puerto Rican Winter League following his minor league season. León was all but guaranteed a non-roster invitation to major league spring training. He turned heads during major league camp last season, but never had a serious chance of breaking with the major league team. Baseball America ranked León sixth in its latest Astros prospect rankings.

The surgery is another setback for León, who has compiled a lengthy injury history since beginning his professional career in 2021. León missed nearly six weeks in 2021 after fracturing his finger and sustained a facial fracture last season after being hit by a pitch. León slashed .228/.365/.431 at Class AAA Sugar Land last season. Houston gave León a $4 million signing bonus during the 2020 international signing period and views him as an elite defensive center fielder with room to grow as an offensive player.
