Australian shares are poised to fall modestly; futures fluctuated in a narrow range overnight. Shares were higher in New York as investors waded through comments from several US policymakers to assess the rate outlook. On Wall St at 4pm: Dow +0.2% S&P +0.3% Nasdaq +0.1%The gain helped the S&P 500 reset its closing record high for a third consecutive session. Eight of the 11 S&P 500 sectors were higher. Energy stocks led gains with a 1.3 per cent rise.
Separately, copper advanced on renewed expectations that China is edging closer to a more determined effort to bolster its economy. Still, iron ore dropped below $US90 a tonne, and oil eased. Bitcoin was holding above $US63,000. US policymakers made clear that they are open to lowering rates as the year progresses.
