Eleven executives have left the group since late 2020, coinciding with the FMG chairman laying out his vision to transform the iron ore miner into a clean energy firm.

Fortescue’s most senior executives, Dino Otranto and Mark Hutchinson, say they aren’t yes men, and challenge Andrew Forrest “every single day” within the parameters of the “vision” set out by the company’s billionaire chairman.

Fortescue’s energy chief executive, Mark Hutchinson, and the company’s mining boss, Dino Otranto, say they can challenge their chairman, Andrew Forrest. On Friday, Mr Otranto said that the company’s “leadership needs to be humble and okay” with Dr Forrest seeking the opinions from employees across the organisation, rather than executives expecting information to “filter” through them. “That’s not how we roll,” he added.

“What I meant by that is when you’ve got a real singular vision, what we want to make sure is everyone is heading towards the vision,” he said. “But then there’s certainly freedom within the window, right? And that’s really the cornerstone to our culture: this empowers fast decision-making.”Dr Forrest wants to transform the iron ore major into a green energy business, with five clean energy projects on the boil set to receive final investment decision by the end of the year.

While Mr Hutchinson said Fortescue is considering partnering with some Chinese technology companies around the world, the group is presently focused on expanding its partnership with Plug Power, a hydrogen player in the United States. Fortescue announced on Friday it had struck a deal with Plug, an integrated firm that makes clean hydrogen, electrolysers and fuel cells, to supply an electrolyser at its Gibson Island ammonia plant.
