ASX rallies to two-week high ahead of Christmas

Australian shares closed higher on Thursday, hitting a two-week high just two days out from Christmas, driven by a broad rally across the market.

P/ASX 200 Index rose 22.8 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 7387.6, its highest level since December 8 as the market rallies into the Christmas period.

The major banks supported the gains with modest advances. Commonwealth Bank advanced 0.3 per cent to $100.11, NAB firmed 0.6 per cent to $28.71, ANZ added 0.6 per cent to $27.40 and Westpac rose 0.5 per cent to $21.18.Regis Resources climbed 4.3 per cent to $1.93, Evolution Mining advanced 2,3 per cent to $4.07, St Barbara added 4.3 per cent to $1.45, Perseus Mining rose 1.6 per cent to $1.62, Newcrest Mining firmed 1.1 per cent to $24.12 and Northern Star Resources closed 0.

Bega Cheese shares fell 10.3 per cent to $5.04 despite telling the market it expected FY22 normalised EBITDA to be as much as 50 per cent ahead of FY21. The market was hoping for a strong rebound from the company. WiseTech Global shares dipped 2.6 per cent to $58.67 after boss Richard White sold 4.3 million shares in the company as part of a “small diversification” of his personal wealth. His control of the company fell to 42 per cent, from 43.3 per cent.
