The mining giant’s sustainability credentials have been in question. But chairman Dominic Barton says it is focused on standards in developing nations.

has signalled the miner will set targets for the preservation of nature and biodiversity to bring international sustainability standards to projects in developing nations.

Rio Tinto chairman Dominic Barton says “we’ve been encouraged to forge ahead on establishing nature and biodiversity targets”.The bauxite spat received little attention at Rio’s annual meeting of British shareholders on Thursday night, with investors instead questioning directors and management over whether they could achieve sustainability standards while working on Guinea’s Simandou iron ore project.

“I left more confident that we will achieve the goals we need to achieve, and it will be something our shareholders can be proud of,” he said.Mr Dalla Valle said Rio was “very aligned” with the civil society groups that were pushing it to set nature and biodiversity targets for its work in Africa.
