In the biggest sell-off for four months the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index lost 149.97 points
Australia's stockmarket was knocked off record highs after aggressive US moves on trade rattled bourses around the world.
Australia's market performed worse than other Asian markets with the Nikkei down just 0.7 per cent, the Hang Seng down 0.2 per cent, and the Shanghai Composite 300 unchanged at the time of the ASX close. All sectors closed in the red with healthcare, communications, information technology, real estate and utilities under-performing the market.
