Jeff Howard watched ex-Seven producer Taylor Auerbach give evidence on Friday while flying back from Adelaide, two weeks before he takes over Seven’s top job.
As soon as Qantas flight 738 was in the air, leaving Adelaide just after 11am on Friday, the front rows pulled out their laptops and went straight to YouTube. At 30,000 feet, media executives and morning television stars were among 20,000 others streaming former Seven Network producer Taylor Auerbach giving explosive evidence in the Federal Court – stretching the limits of Qantas’ in-flight Wi-Fi.host Natalie Barr sat in business, while co-host Matt Shirvington sat in economy.
But there was only one topic of conversation, multiple attendees said, being Auerbach’s evidence in court, and talk of how Stokes was “seething”. One attendee was overhead quipping that it was going to be a good event: Seven will supply the hookers and cocaine, while the AFL would supply the free drug test.
Even still, Auerbach’s allegations, which Seven denies, paint a newsroom crossing the line of what is acceptable, leaving societal norms far in the rearview mirror.Seven has already painted Auerbach as a rogue, denying his allegations, and Lehrmann’s silk Matthew Richardson, SC, sought to colour him as an alcoholic who is blinded by his hatred of former friends and colleagues Steve Jackson and Llewellyn.
