Australian shares are set to open higher. Wall Street slipped to start its trading week with oil rising amid continuing uncertainty about the outlook for the war between the US and Iran.

President Donald Trump told reporters at a White House event that the US is poised to win the war “very soon”. Oil’s rise renewed worries about inflation and the prospect that the Federal Reserve will be forced to lift interest rates in late October. The probability of a quarter percentage point rate increase next month is at 70.3 per cent, up from 64.2 on Friday and 17.7 per cent a month ago.

ASX 200 futures were up 12 points or 0.1 per cent to 8732 near 5.15am . In New York, the S&P 500 was down 0.7 per cent near 3.15pm. Communication services paced eight of the 11 industry sectors lower. The yield on the US 10-year note spiked as high as 5.27 per cent before slightly paring that early morning move.

At 3.15pm it was 9 basis points higher to 5.25 per cent. The UK equivalent rose 6 basis points to 5.42 per cent.
